Nadine Levin didn’t follow the traditional recipe for launching a business, and that’s exactly what makes her story so sweet. After spending over 14 years in the advertising world, Nadine never imagined that a friend’s request for wedding cupcakes would change her life. But that single act of baking sparked something unexpected—a new path, a food truck, and eventually, one of the Merrimack Valley’s most beloved cupcake shops.

Pipe Dream Cupcakes started on wheels, popping up at farmers markets and festivals across the region, quickly gaining a loyal following. What started as a kind gesture in the kitchen turned into award-winning cupcakes that the Merrimack Valley can’t get enough of. Nadine has earned nine “Best of North Shore” awards, and in 2024, she made the leap from mobile to permanent—opening a cozy, brick-and-mortar shop at 48 Water Street in North Andover.

We spoke with Nadine about her journey, where she shared how each cupcake is more than just dessert—it’s a reminder that it’s never too late to rewrite your story. What began as a pipe dream is now a thriving small business, made possible by bold choices, community support, and a whole lot of heart.

1. You spent over 14 years in advertising, what inspired you to take the leap and follow your passion for baking?

To be honest, I never had a passion for baking. I started baking after I had children. A friend of mine saw some of things that I baked and wanted me to bake for her wedding. A guest at her wedding hired me to cater her wedding and it snowballed from there.

2. Why did you decide to launch Pipe Dream Cupcakes as a food truck first, and what was that early chapter like for you?

When I decided to switch careers and start my business, I was not able to afford a store front. I worked in Boston and at that time, Food Trucks starting to blossom. I thought that would be my way into the industry. When I started, I was attending Farmers Markets and Festivals and selling on Main St in Andover and North Andover. Corporate events started to grow as well along with private parties and events.

3. Opening a storefront is a big step—what made you feel it was the right time to make that move?

Since my business was growing, I wanted a place where people could come, sit and have coffee and a cupcake. I also wanted a location where people could pick up their orders. Having a food truck definitely had its limitations.

4. How did the local community—residents, fellow business owners, or the town—show up for you during your expansion?

The support of the residents and business owners have always been wonderful. Ever since I started my truck, the business owners have been so supportive of my business.

5. Looking back on everything it took to open your brick-and-mortar location, what are you most proud of—and what does that say about your journey, your growth, or your purpose?

I am most proud of the journey. I could not have done it without the support of my friends and family. I had a vision as to what my shop would look like and I am so proud that everything came to fruition.

6. As you look ahead, what’s next for you and Pipe Dream Cupcakes? What dreams are still in the works?

Not sure what is next for PDC. My goal for now is to provide the Merrimack Valley with the best cupcakes around. If I can do that, then I will be satisfied.
